How to choose a motherboard and graphics card?
I’m building my own pc for games like world of warcraft and starwars the old republic. I’m having trouble picking a motherboard and graphics card. I’m probably either going to use a i5 2500k or i7 2600k processor. My budget is $1000ish for the whole pc so the motherboard and graphics card can’t be too expensive. I only want to have 8gbs of ram but room to upgrade in the future. Considering your budget I would get the i5 2500k processor as the only real difference between the i5 2500k and i7 2600k is that the i7 2600k has hyperthreading, which gives it 8 logical cores, however it still has 4 physical cores. Hyperthreading has been proven to provide very little or no affect to gameplay and so I recommend getting the i5 2500k. Also the i5 2500k will run slightly cooler than the i7 2600k and I can say this because I bought the i7 2600k for my system and when I turned hyperthreading off, the cpu temps dropped 5-6 C. So, basically I spent extra for something I am not using, lol.

In conclusion there is no real world gain from using hyperthreading when playing games. As well as this, the overall lower temperature of the i5 2500k will allow more overclocking headroom.
Cost of i5 2500k – $219.99, which is about 95 dollars less than the i7 2600k and performance wise is on par with the i7 2600k in most situations.
You will also need cooling for your CPU, I would suggest the Cooler Master Hyper 212+. This is a very good cooler for the price and it keeps my i7 2600k overclocked to 4GHz at a steady 55 – 58 C, which is well below the recommended maximum of 72 C.
Cost – $29.49
For your motherboard I would suggest using the ASUS P8P67 PRO (REV 3.1). This is the motherboard I am using with my i7 2600k and I am very impressed with it. It is the 3.1 revision, which means that the bugs found on the earlier versions have been remedied.
Cost – $179.99
For your RAM i would suggest the CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB). These will be fully compatible with the motherboard I have suggested and because the motherboard has 4 DIMM slots you will be able to add an additional 8GB of RAM in the future, giving you a total of 16GB.
Cost – $74.99
For your Power Supply I think that a 500 – 600w one would be more than enough, but I suggest getting a more powerful one in case you want to add another graphics card in the future. I think a 750w power supply will be ideal for future upgrades. Although if you want to use more than two graphics cards then a minimum of a 1000w power supply should be used.
Cost – $159.99
For your hard-drives I suggest that you use a Solid State Drive for the bootup drive and another hard-drive for storage. Although you can just use a single larger hard-drive for the installation of Windows and storage. I think that a single larger hard-drive would be the best option as that would leave you with some extra cash to buy a much better graphics card.
Cost – $54.99
The above is a 1TB hard-drive, which should be enough for a while and when you have the extra cash you can buy some more and simply connect them to your motherboard.
The total for the above comes to $718.49. which leaves you just under $300 for a graphics card.
I would suggest the PNY GTX 580
Cost – $229.99
That brings your total to: $947.49.
