Does changing a playstation 3 hard drive void warranty?

I’m buying a friends 500GB PS3 today (Originally was a 40GB) but don’t know the details.
Does switching the HDD void warranty?
Is this considered a “mod” ? Will I still be able to go online with the system?

The PS3s HDD is specifically made to be easily changed and swapped out. It doesn’t void the warranty. If it did, it wouldn’t be so easy to do.
