Will the intel Celeron® Dual-Core 2.6GHz Processor E3400 replace an intel celeron 420 cpu?

The pc I wish to do this upgrade on is an e-machine W3622. Will the newer celeron fit and function properly?

Fit? Yes. Function? No.

That W3622 used Intel’s 945GC express chipset. The E3400 isn’t on the compatible processor list for that chipset, so it’s doubtful that it will work. http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=28994#compatibility

Even if it did work on that chipset, there’s no guarantee that emachines BIOS was ever updated to recognize that processor. While the motherboard must have the right circuitry to work with a processor, the BIOS must also recognize that cpu or it will sit and do nothing. OEM manufacturers like eMachines are unlikely to upgrade the BIOS unless they actually sold a model with that processor.
