How to build a computer from SCRATCH?

I want to know how I can build (or at least experiment) a computer from scratch. Not by getting parts (mobo, power supply, etc.) but by soldering parts together onto integrated circuit boards and such. I know Radio Shack sells a lot of the necessary parts but, I don’t know where to start or how to start. Thanks.

Actually a modern CPU has over a billion transistors in it. Not a million, a billion.

So there is no way you could build this on PC boards with transistors. A billion transistors would cost (at 10¢ each), US$100 million, to start, not to consider the PC boards, power supplys, bypass caps, and wires. And it would take up lots of room.

A good sized PC board could have 300 transistors on it. that means for a billion transistors, you would need 3 million PC boards. At a volume of 10x10x1 inch, that’s 100 cubic inches. Times 3 million, that is a volume of 6000 cubic yards, or if you piled them 2 yards high, an area 50 yards by 50 yards. A large building.

And, it would run very very slow. After you spent 20 years getting it working.

And that’s just the CPU, not the memory, disk drive, IO, and other parts of a desktop PC.

The same goes for firewire: people often assume that this comes as standards but that’s by no means the case. It’s a good idea to have a list of requirements that you can then cross-reference against each motherboard before making your final decision.
