Amd Cpu Roadmap
AMD X2 6400+ vs. Intel?
I’m looking to build a Gaming System that will keep me happy for quite some time. I want something that will be able to handle Crysis, and all of the latest games.
I was considering building the system with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ processor. However, I just saw some benchmarks on Tom’s Hardware that are starting to make me change my mind. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/AMD-X2-6400,review-29612-5.html
I then read an article on DailyTech that AMD is planning on discontinuing the 6000+ and 6400+ processors. They are moving to 65nm CPUs with the first being a 5600+. http://www.dailytech.com/AMD+Resurrects+K8+Architecture+for+2008+Roadmap/article9899.htm
Should I stick with AMD, and just build the system with the X2 6400+, or just wait until next year when new processors from both AMD and Intel come out?
If I go with Intel, should I wait for the X48 chipset, and new CPUs?
if money is not a problem, then totally wait for the x48 chipset. This chipset will support the 1600mhz fsb that the new 45nm penryn cores will use. It will be a pricey build, but it will smoke any comparable amd setup by quite a bit. I read reviews recently of the x38 chipset and how it smoked the 680i by margins of 10-15%. That is unheard of for a mobo. I assume the x48 will do just as well if not better!
Like I said, it will cost you…but it will be like driving a ferrari when everyone else has a civic.
